What Is International Medical Transport and Who Needs It

When an accident, serious illness, or emergency surgery disrupts their plans, families face an extremely challenging situation: the patient is hospitalised in a foreign country and needs to be safely brought home — or, conversely, must be urgently transported from a hospital in Romania to a specialist clinic in the EU.
International medical transport (or medical repatriation) means moving a patient over long distances, across borders, while ensuring medical care continuity throughout the journey. Unlike a simple flight or car trip, international medical transport requires a qualified crew, medical equipment on board, and strict coordination with the healthcare facilities involved.

When Is International Medical Transport Necessary

What a Well-Organised Medical Repatriation Involves
1. Assessment of the Patient's Condition
Before any international journey, the attending physician at the originating hospital issues a detailed medical report (discharge summary) describing the diagnosis, treatment administered, current medication, equipment required on board (oxygen, monitor, IV line, etc.), and transport restrictions. The NucleusMED team reviews this document and prepares the ambulance accordingly.
2. Coordination with Health or Travel Insurance
If the patient holds international private health insurance or a travel insurance policy, the insurer may partially or fully cover the transport cost. NucleusMED can provide the documentation required for a claim. Without insurance, costs are borne by the family.
Note that the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) covers emergency treatment in EU member states, but does not cover repatriation transport — this remains the responsibility of the patient or their private insurer.
3. Cross-Border Documentation
International medical transport by ambulance requires specific documents: the vehicle's health operating authorisation, the ANMDMR approval for the relevant transport type, the patient's and companion's identity documents, the medical report, and, depending on the destination, a declaration from the receiving physician.
