Medical Transport for Oxygen-Dependent Patients in Brașov — Private Ambulance

Important: For medical emergencies, call 112 — a free public service. NucleusMED provides private, pre-scheduled, paid transport exclusively for stable, non-emergency patients.

Who needs medical transport with supplemental oxygen?

Hundreds of thousands of Romanians live with chronic pulmonary conditions that require long-term oxygen therapy: advanced COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, chronic respiratory failure, or the aftermath of severe COVID-19. For these patients, even a short trip to a specialist can be a real challenge — they cannot interrupt their oxygen supply, cannot use a regular taxi, and are too frail for public transport.

Adapted medical transport for oxygen therapy solves exactly this problem, ensuring continuity of treatment, patient comfort, and travel safety from the patient's door to their destination and back.

What does oxygen-adapted medical transport involve?

Not every vehicle equipped with a stretcher is suitable for an oxygen-dependent patient. Properly organised transport requires:

  • A portable oxygen concentrator or medical oxygen cylinders with enough capacity for the estimated travel time (including waiting time at the destination)
  • A pulse oximeter for continuous monitoring of oxygen saturation (SpO₂) throughout the journey
  • An articulated stretcher or adapted wheelchair for patients with reduced mobility or who are fully immobilised
  • Bronchial suction equipment where the patient has secretions and requires this intervention

The NucleusMED crew is trained to maintain the oxygen flow rate prescribed by the treating physician and to recognise signs of clinical deterioration during transport, acting in line with established protocols.

Common scenarios for oxygen-dependent transport

Regular specialist consultations and check-ups

Patients with severe COPD or pulmonary fibrosis attend regular appointments with their pulmonologist, cardiologist, or related specialists. Bed-to-bed transport — from home to the clinic and back — eliminates the physical exertion that can worsen breathlessness and the risk of decompensation.

Imaging investigations (chest CT, MRI, X-ray)

Chest imaging is common for pulmonary patients. NucleusMED provides transport for CT or MRI appointments with uninterrupted oxygen therapy, even in environments where companion access may be restricted.

Planned hospital admission and discharge

Both planned admissions and discharges require journeys during which continuity of oxygen therapy is essential. NucleusMED collects the patient from home or the hospital and transports them safely to their destination without interrupting the oxygen supply.

Inter-hospital transfer for stable patients

If the patient's physician recommends a transfer to another facility — for example, from a hospital in Brașov to a clinic in Bucharest or Cluj — the journey is planned with up-to-date medical documentation and oxygen equipment sized for the full distance of the trip.

What information is needed when booking?

To prepare the right vehicle and crew for your patient's needs, please provide at the time of booking:

  1. Primary diagnosis and purpose of transport (consultation, investigation, admission)
  2. Prescribed oxygen flow rate (litres per minute) and the type of device used at home (nasal cannula, simple mask, non-rebreather mask)
  3. Mobility level: walks independently, needs assistance, or requires a stretcher
  4. Distance, departure time, and any expected waiting time at the destination
  5. Companion presence — a family member or a medical escort, as recommended by the physician

Based on this information, the crew arrives prepared with the appropriate oxygen cylinders or portable concentrator and the necessary monitoring equipment.

Private transport or 112/SMURD?

NucleusMED is not an emergency service. If the patient shows signs of acute respiratory distress, cyanosis, loss of consciousness, or any life-threatening symptom, call 112 immediately — SMURD and SAJ are public services, available free of charge 24/7.

NucleusMED is the right solution for planned transport, when the patient's condition is stable and allows safe travel with the equipment available on board.

NucleusMED authorisation and equipment

NucleusMED holds a health authorisation issued by DSP Brașov and an ANMDMR permit, and operates a fleet of Mercedes-Benz vehicles equipped in accordance with current legal requirements. Technical standards for private ambulances are regulated by the National Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices (ANMDMR), while quality standards in medical transport are established by the Romanian Ministry of Health.
