Post-Surgery Patient Transport: How to Organise a Safe Transfer After an Operation

Why Post-Operative Transport Requires a Specialised Approach

Returning home or transferring to a rehabilitation centre after surgery is not a simple car ride. A post-operative patient is often in a vulnerable state: residual effects of anaesthesia, pain on movement, fresh sutures, active drains, catheters or infusions. Improvised transport — in an ordinary car, without a trained crew — can compromise suture integrity, trigger vascular complications or worsen pain.

NucleusMED private ambulance provides specialised post-operative medical transport, with qualified crews and properly equipped vehicles authorised by DSP Brașov and certified by ANMDMR, available in Brașov and across Romania and the EU.

Important: In the event of any medical emergency — heavy bleeding, breathing difficulties, loss of consciousness — call 112 (free public service). NucleusMED provides scheduled, paid private medical transport for clinically stable patients.

Types of Procedures for Which Private Medical Transport Is Recommended

Post-operative medical transport is recommended after a wide range of procedures:

  • Orthopaedic surgery — hip or knee replacements, operated fractures, arthroscopies; the patient cannot sit in a normal position and requires a stretcher or trolley
  • Abdominal surgery — appendectomies, cholecystectomies, hernia repairs, intestinal operations; sudden movements can stress sutures
  • Cardiac and thoracic surgery — coronary bypass, valve repair; the patient may need cardiac monitoring and a semi-reclined position
  • Neurosurgery and spinal surgery — operated disc herniation, laminectomies; transport in a supine position on a stretcher is essential
  • Oncological surgery — tumour resections, mastectomies; the patient may be debilitated and requires maximum comfort
  • ENT and ophthalmological procedures — especially when position restrictions or sensitivity to light and noise apply

What High-Quality Post-Operative Transport Involves

Pre-Transport Assessment of the Patient's Needs

Before dispatching the crew, NucleusMED requests information about:

  • the type of procedure and the date it was performed
  • current mobility status (can the patient stand? climb stairs?)
  • active medical devices (infusion, drain, urinary catheter, pulse oximeter)
  • current pain level and medication
  • destination (home, rehabilitation centre, another medical facility)

This information allows the crew to prepare the vehicle and appropriate equipment before arrival.

A Crew Trained in Post-Operative Mobilisation

The NucleusMED crew is trained in gentle patient mobilisation techniques — the transfer from the hospital bed to the stretcher is carried out by at least three people, using transfer boards or sliding sheets, to avoid stressing sutures and to minimise pain. We never rush and never improvise.

Adapted Vehicle and Medical Equipment

NucleusMED ambulances are Mercedes-Benz vehicles equipped with:

  • a height- and tilt-adjustable stretcher — essential for patients who cannot tolerate a completely flat or horizontal position
  • side securing rails for comfort during travel
  • medical oxygen and pulse oximeter
  • blood pressure monitor and glucometer
  • first-response kit and AED defibrillator

Bed-to-Bed Transfer

NucleusMED practises bed-to-bed transfer — the crew collects the patient directly from the ward or recovery room and delivers them to their destination in the same manner, without leaving the patient unattended in corridors or lifts.

Post-Operative Transport with a Companion

Many post-operative patients return home without a family member, or have a relative who cannot drive. NucleusMED allows one companion in the ambulance — spouse, adult child, carer — who can be present throughout the journey at no additional cost for their place in the vehicle.

The presence of a familiar person reduces patient anxiety and facilitates communication with the crew in case of special needs during transit.

Planning the Transfer: How Far in Advance Should You Book?

We recommend booking at least 24 hours before discharge, ideally as soon as the attending physician confirms the date and time. This interval allows:

  • confirmation of crew availability
  • coordination with the hospital ward for the handover
  • preparation of the vehicle and specific equipment

Same-day urgent bookings are possible subject to availability — contact us as early as possible.

Transfer to a Post-Operative Rehabilitation Centre

Not all patients return directly home. Some need specialised medical rehabilitation — physiotherapy, physical therapy, continuous medical care. NucleusMED provides post-operative transfers to rehabilitation centres in Brașov or in other counties, to the same standards of care throughout the journey.

Consult your attending physician to identify the most appropriate rehabilitation centre; we handle the transport logistics. Information on the authorisation and certification of medical ambulances can be found on the ANMDMR website — the National Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices in Romania.

What the Law Says: Who Authorises Private Ambulances

Private medical ambulances in Romania must hold a sanitary operating licence issued by the DSP (Public Health Directorate) of their county and an ANMDMR certificate for medical device compliance. NucleusMED meets both requirements, and the documents are available on request.

The Ministry of Health publishes the regulations governing medical transport at www.ms.ro — you can check the legal framework applicable to private ambulance services there.
