How to choose the right private ambulance

When a family member needs transport to the hospital, to an investigation, or home after discharge, choosing the right service matters enormously for the patient's safety and comfort. Here is what you should check.

1. Licensing and equipment

A serious medical transport service holds an operating health authorization from the Public Health Directorate (DSP) and ANMDMR approval for its ambulances. Ask about equipment: a rolling stretcher, stair-climbing chair, medical oxygen and mobilization gear are essential for patients with reduced mobility.

Ask for the sanitary authorization number, or verify that the vehicle has distinctive ambulance registration plates. Authorized services have no issue providing this information.

2. Assisted or non-assisted transport

  • Assisted — a nurse accompanies the patient throughout the trip, with monitoring and oxygen if needed. Recommended for unstable patients or those with complex conditions.
  • Non-assisted — for stable patients who do not require medical supervision during travel.

Consult the attending physician or specialist to determine which type of transport is appropriate for the patient's situation. Full details on the Services page.

3. Price transparency

Ask for a clear price, with all fees included, before the transport. At NucleusMED we communicate the full rate at the time of the quote, with no hidden costs. See estimates on our Pricing page or request a personalised quote via the Contact page.

4. Coverage and availability

Check whether the service covers the route you need — local, county, national or international. NucleusMED provides transport in Brașov, throughout the country and across the European Union, including medical repatriations and inter-hospital transfers.

5. Experience with the specific type of transport

Some situations require specific expertise from the crew:

  • Dialysis transport — patients with chronic kidney failure need recurring trips, typically three times a week. The crew must know the dialysis centre schedule and deliver consistent punctuality. See our dialysis patient transport guide.
  • Post-discharge transport — picking the patient up from the ward and transporting them home or to another care facility requires appropriate equipment and a trained crew.
  • Oncology transport — patients undergoing oncology treatment (chemotherapy, radiotherapy) often need extra support during recurring trips. See our oncology transport Brașov guide.
  • Inter-hospital transfers — moving between hospitals requires coordination with the medical team and possibly assisted transport.

6. What to prepare before calling

To speed up the booking process and ensure a smooth transfer, have the following ready:

  • Exact pick-up address — floor, flat number, lift or stair access
  • Destination: hospital, clinic, dialysis centre or home
  • Patient mobility status — whether they need a stretcher, wheelchair, or can walk with support
  • Any attached medical devices: oxygen, IV drip, urinary catheter
  • Estimated pick-up time

With this information at hand, the NucleusMED team can prepare the right vehicle and provide a quote within minutes. Full details on our Services and Pricing pages.
